You can use Expedition "out of the box". The software provides a global low resolution map that can be used for planning ocean crossings and other long distance trips. If you want to use Expedition for shorter trips, or as your primary plotter, you will need to add charts to the master chart that ships with it. Depending on where you live, this can be easy and cheap... or not. For more on this see the (yet to be written) top level page on Charts.
